Adequate housing is a fundamental human need and a cornerstone of dignity, health, and social stability. Yet, many low-income families in rural and urban settlements across Sri Lanka continue to live in substandard conditions — without secure shelter, proper ventilation, or access to basic utilities. The absence of safe and stable housing not only affects physical wellbeing but also limits educational and economic opportunities, particularly for women and children.
AHF Sri Lanka’s housing initiatives focus on providing safe, affordable, and sustainable shelter for vulnerable families. Working in partnership with local communities, programs emphasize low-cost construction techniques using locally available materials. Community members actively participate in the building process, ensuring that houses are designed to meet their specific needs while fostering a sense of ownership and pride.
Beyond physical structures, housing projects are integrated with water, sanitation, and livelihood components to promote holistic community development. Training in maintenance, disaster resilience, and environmental sustainability ensures that each home contributes to long-term stability and improved living standards.
AHF Sri Lanka also collaborates with local authorities and partner organizations to advocate for equitable access to housing support programs and land tenure security. By addressing housing as both a social and developmental right, these initiatives help restore dignity, strengthen families, and build the foundations for lasting community wellbeing.
