Access to education remains a critical challenge, particularly for children from low-income families, with girls often facing the greatest barriers. Many are forced to stay home to help with household chores or care for younger siblings, while others drop out due to the costs of uniforms, books, and transportation. The lack of safe, child-friendly schools further prevents children from attending regularly. When these barriers are removed, the benefits are transformative; education empowers children, opens doors to opportunities, and creates lasting change in families and communities.
Support for education does not always require complex solutions or expensive resources. Local partners of AHF Sri Lanka use simple, practical approaches that communities can implement themselves. For example, classrooms can be equipped with locally made desks and benches, libraries stocked with donated or handmade books, and teachers trained in innovative, low-cost teaching methods. Communities are also taught to monitor school attendance, maintain facilities, and organize learning sessions for children who cannot attend full-time.
Education is also a matter of equity. Too often, children in marginalized areas are promised educational resources or scholarships that never reach them. In such cases, AHF Sri Lanka’s local partners help communities advocate for their children’s rights, ensuring that government support, scholarships, and programs are delivered fairly. After all, why should children in affluent neighborhoods have access to quality education while children in poorer communities are left behind?
