FOOD SECURITY

Food insecurity remains a critical challenge for vulnerable families in Sri Lanka, particularly among low-income households affected by poverty, unemployment, natural disasters, and economic instability. Many families struggle to access sufficient, nutritious food on a regular basis, placing women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities at greater risk.

Al-Hikma Foundation addresses these challenges through comprehensive food security interventions aimed at ensuring access to safe, adequate, and nutritious food while strengthening household resilience.

Key food security interventions include:

  • Distribution of dry ration food packs to vulnerable families
  • Provision of emergency food assistance during disasters and crises
  • Support for nutrition-sensitive programs targeting children, pregnant women, and the elderly
  • Promotion of household-level food production, including home gardening and small- scale farming initiatives
  • Integration of food support with livelihood and income-generation programs to ensure long-term food sustainability

Through these initiatives, Al-Hikma Foundation not only addresses immediate hunger but also contributes to long-term food security, improved nutrition, and community resilience, ensuring that vulnerable families can live with dignity and stability.
